Decoding Body Language: What Your Interior Design Client Isn’t Telling You

As an interior designer, it’s important to not only understand the design preferences of your clients, but also to read and interpret their body language. By understanding the nonverbal cues that your clients give off, you can gain insight into their true thoughts and feelings about your design ideas, and make adjustments to better meet their needs.

One of the first things to pay attention to is eye contact. If your client is avoiding eye contact, it may indicate that they are not fully invested in the project or are uncomfortable with the design direction. On the other hand, if your client is making prolonged eye contact, it may indicate that they are particularly interested in your ideas or that they are trying to build a deeper connection with you.

Another important aspect of body language to pay attention to is posture. If your client is slouching or hunching over, it may indicate that they are feeling insecure or unenthusiastic about your ideas. On the other hand, if your client is sitting up straight and tall, it may indicate that they are confident and excited about the project.

Hand gestures are also a key aspect of body language to pay attention to. If your client is crossing their arms or legs, it may indicate that they are feeling defensive or closed off to new ideas. On the other hand, if your client is open and relaxed, with their arms and legs uncrossed, it may indicate that they are open to new ideas and willing to collaborate.

Facial expressions are also an important aspect of body language to pay attention to. A client who is frowning or scowling may be indicating that they are unhappy or dissatisfied with your ideas. On the other hand, a client who is smiling and nodding may be indicating that they are happy and satisfied with your ideas.

By paying attention to these nonverbal cues, you can gain insight into the true thoughts and feelings of your clients, and make adjustments to better meet their needs. Remember, communication is not just about the words that are spoken, but also about the cues that are given off through body language. By paying attention to both verbal and nonverbal communication, you can build stronger, more effective relationships with your clients and create designs that they truly love.
